Characterization of Number the Stars

How does the setting of the story effect the characters?

Growing up in Denmark during the Holocaust is very hard, especially when your best friend and her family is jewish. When our main character, Annemarie, has a friend who's family is being targeted by the Nazis Annmarie, her sister Kirsti, and her parents have to try to smuggle her friend Ellen to Sweden (which the Nazis have not taken over). The main reason the setting effects the characters is that because the Nazis have taken over Denmark dangerous solders are every where on the streets, buildings and more making it hard to not get caught smuggling her friend to Sweden.

The characterization of this story was primarily based upon the setting of the story. Some of the most important characters lives are based on the setting, like her uncle who helped try to get her friend across to Sweden on his boat. If the story didn't happen at this specific time all of the characters lives would have been extremely different! In reality, the setting of the story gravely affects the character's characterization throughout the story.

  1. I have this book but has never read it. I want to read it now. The way you described the setting and how she lives I agree that it affects her life.
