Of Mice and Men Reflection Blog

Prompts:
  1.  In the film, the director shows us “the incident in Weed” differently from how we find out in the book. What’s different? Why do you think he chose to do it that way? How does it change the story?
  2. The book begins with the “stage” set by the pond. In the film, we see George on a train first. Why would the director do this? What is the director telling us about George’s life?
  3. What do you think of the director’s choice of Sharilynn Fenn to play Curley’s wife? Does she look the way you imagined her in the book? Whom would you have chosen?
In the movie, Of Mice and Men, the scene in Weed, was much different than the one explained in the book. First of all, the girl is actually chasing them, which didn't happen in the book. They also were chasing Lennie and George, not looking for them. I think the director chose to do it this way, because it adds more action to the story, and makes it more interesting. It is also the beginning of the story so he probably wanted to add some big bang to start off the story and draw you in! This changes the story, because it changes their circumstances when running from people. Otherwise, it does not change the story much, besides making it more interesting.

The director probably chose to start the story on a train for many reasons. First, it is pretty much a good way to start a movie. The director also might have done this because he wanted to show that they were leaving Weed. The director is telling us that George's life, has a lot of trains and transportation in it, because he moves around so much! This is also due to Lennie's behavior, getting them kicked of town, after town, after town! This also shows that he has to deal with moving around a lot, and has not had a place to call home in a long time.

I think that the director made a pretty good choice when choosing Sharilynn Fenn to play Curley's wife. She was a pretty good actor and portrayed her character pretty well! She looked very much like her, but I imagined her to dress a little differently, and have a but more Curly (Get it?) hair. All the other parts are just like I imagined while reading the book! I would have chosen Sharilynn Fenn to play Curley's wife if I had the choice, so I think he did a pretty good job, knowing what a hard character Curley's wife is to cast!

I personally think that Of Mice and Men was a great book, except the ending. I enjoyed the conflicts and I thought they were very interesting. I would probably read this book again. The only part I didn't like about this book was the ending. I really hated the ending a lot! It could have been happy and a good ending for all the characters and they get their house, but no, the author had to make it sad. I thought books were supposed to have happy endings! After reading Of Mice and Men, I guess not.
